2. Background Information
The Ksords and Akhtarians are closely-related peoples who share a language and a culture. They were ruled by the Crimean Tatars for over 500 years, and there is a large Tatar population in Central Kubania. Russia conquered the region in 1783. After a brief and chaotic period of independence following the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, Ksordia-Akhtaria became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, a one-party dictatorship ruled by the Communists.
